:: About Us - Merry Hearts Foundation
Merry Hearts Scholarship Fund is an initiative of The Merry Hearts Foundation (MHF) Inc.
The Merry Hearts Scholarship Fund's main objective is to provide financial assistance in the form of a scholarship to students in need, while promoting an environment of encouragement to let the students know and understand that they are of value not only to their family and school, but to their nation and the global arena.
We recognize that in a world where everything revolves around money, too many talented and motivated students are cheated out of a quality education because of their families’ inability to meet the financial obligations of sending a child to school.
As such, the child is denied the opportunity to compete on a national or global level for employment opportunities and/or social and political involvement.
On a daily basis, due to lack of education, too many of our talented youths are being denied a chance to achieve their dreams.
Some Facts About Education in Africa:
As observed in a White House press release titled Africa Education Initiative:
“African children are the future of the continent. Their education is key to future economic growth and lasting democracy, leading to greater stability and improved standards of living. The current state of education in Africa, however, is plagued by a lack of funds, teachers, textbooks, and transparency”
- Primary school enrollment and literacy rates in Africa are among the lowest in the world.
- 42 million school children in sub-Saharan Africa are not enrolled in school according to the Human Development Index.
- According to the Population Council; At least 37 million young people aged 10–14 in sub-Saharan Africa will not complete primary school, this number is nearly twice the total population of children aged 10–14 in the United States, virtually all of whom complete primary school. Further, nearly 21 million children in this age range in sub-Saharan Africa have never attended school.
- Almost 1 in 5 children in developing nations will drop out of school before completing primary school.
